The
Women
&
Islam
Discussion
List
has
been
set
up
as
a
forum
for
the
discussion
and
debate
of
issues
relating
to
the
rights
of
women
in
Islam,
including
Muslim
Personal
Law
and
campaigns
around
gender
in
Islam
and
the
Muslim
Community.
It
aims
to
increase
and
improve
scholarship
and
thought
around
this
issues.
This
list
was
set
up
in
honour
of
Shamima
Shaikh,
a
foremost
Women's
Rights
Activist
in
South
Africa,
a
founder
and
National
Co-ordinator
of
the
Muslim
Youth
Movement's
Gender
Desk,
editor
of
the
progressive
Muslim
monthly
al-Qalam,
and
Chairperson
of
the
Muslim
Community
Broadcasting
Trust
-
which
owns
The
Voice
community
radio
in
Johannesburg.
Since
it
is
a
list
in
her
honour
it
was
given
the
name
"shams"
-
a
nickname
of
Shamima's.
Shams
is
also
an
Arabic
word
meaning
"sun".
The
administrators
of
the
list
are
Anna
Ghonim
and
Na'eem
Jeenah.
